Not just content but stories that resonate. I meld my marketing sensibilities with Tolkien-inspired creativity.
This is Alden Boon, a freelance writer born, bred and based in Singapore. This is the point where I should tell you how many years of experience I have, but that would immediately betray my true age. So, to make you do some arithmetic acrobatics, I shall say that I have been writing “since 2009”.
As a writer, long-form articles do not intimidate me: I churn out 5000-word human interest stories for my own magazine over at nedla.sg, covering the lived experiences of people living with HIV and disability as well as domestic abuse and entrepreneurship journeys. The stories have been shared by Minister of State Mr Alvin Tan and Madam Ho Ching. Thought leadership pieces? I relish the chance to interview passionate experts about their life’s works (it may be because I am a lonely freelance writer with no colleagues to talk to). My clients praise my ability to distil complex topics into easy-to-understand yet riveting stories.
Annual reports? I enjoy living vicariously through your company’s success. As a nature lover worried about the status quo, it heartens me to read about big climate-change actions while polishing sustainability reports. Website-writing projects turn my world topsy-turvy, because I am verbose to a fault (but I secretly welcome the challenge because something about brevity and wit’s soul). And you have just witnessed how I flawlessly incorporate SEO keywords into my copy to avoid sounding like ChatGPT (no offence, ChatGPT!).
“There’s a sea of writers (and ChatGPT) out there. Why should we hire you?”
There is a reason why I am currently the go-to copywriter for five creative and communications agencies in Singapore. And why my clients come back to me for repeat projects. It is not because I am a super talented writer (that is in my opinion reserved for the Tolkiens of the world). It is simply because I care about the work.
As a wordsmith, I obsess over every single word. As a storyteller, I desire to enrich the world with your experts’ hard-won insights. As a creative soul, I want to rejuvenate the way we approach marketing content. As an busybody interviewer, I have been told by different personalities that I am the first person to show up superbly prepared and that I am really a cute guy.
Above anything, I am easy to work with. If you are nice, then I will be even nicer. As a perfectionist (and aspiring fitness buff), I welcome constructive comments on how to whip the copy into fighting shape. And I am reliable. This is my livelihood, so I am grateful for every project that comes my way, and do not see it as just another task to cross off.
